A woman who started her career as a scale one clerical worker has risen to become acting assistant chief executive at Knowsley MBC.

Barbara Spicer, 35, left school at 15 and took up a clerical post in Knowsley's housing department.

'I was responsible for making the tea and coffee and general office work,' she said. 'When I got the job I was really doing it for the wages and a career plan was the last thing on my mind.'

Ms Spicer became involved in housing estates and so impressed one group of tenants they named a street after her - Spicer Grove.

Her new role sees her working alongside chief executive Steve Gallagher managing 7,000 staff.
