RJB Mining has postponed the closure of the last colliery in the North East amid increasing hopes of a£70m government aid package, reports The Times (p29).

Ellington colliery, which employs 360 people, had been due to shut at the end of the month, but the closure has been put back to the end of March.

If RJB receives state funding, Clipstone colliery, near Mansfield, which is due to close in September, could also be reprieved.

The aid package would probably run in conjunction with funding from Europe.
