According to provisional figures published today, there were 962 deaths in personal injury road accidents in the third quarter of 1995.

This compares with 930 deaths recorded in the third quarter of 1994. There were 11,994 serious injuries, similar to the number in the third quarter of 1994, and slight injuries rose by two per cent to 68,111. Overall, total casualties rose by two per cent to 81,067.

Road traffic increased by two per cent and the overall casualty rate rose by one per cent.

Car user casualties rose by three per cent to 49,039, while car traffic rose by two per cent. The car user casualty rate also increased by two per cent. There were 456 car user deaths and 5,466 serious injuries.

Child casualties increased by four per cent to 13,090. This total included 75 deaths and 2,121 serious injuries.

Pedestrian casualties of all ages were little changed at 11,314 compared with the same quarter of last year. There were 217 deaths and 2,696 serious injuries.

Pedal cyclist casualties increased by five per cent to 8,123, including 66 deaths and 1,262 serious injuries.

Motorcyclist casualties (including moped and scooter users) showed little change at 6,972. There were 161 deaths and 1,847 serious injuries.
