Mysterious signs dedicated to pop stars which have sprung up on the main road through Preston on Wye near Hereford are baffling the local community, reports the Independent (p3).

The signs started after a local farmer's placed a makeshift sign warning of 'mud' on the road. It was soon joined by another sign bearing the word 'Showaddywaddy'.

Over the past three weeks more than 30 home made signs dedicated to Elton John, Nancy Sinatra, the Carpenters and others have appeared. They include a pair of jeans hanging from an oak tree with a sign saying 'Swinging Blue Jeans'.

A local councillor, Harry Hancox, is named as a prime suspect.

'For some reason they keep blaming me but I'm definitely not guilty,' he told the paper.
