A government surveyors report has revealed that roads are in their worst state of repair for at least 20 years, with nearly 7,000 miles of highway needing total replacement.

The Daily Telegraph (p8) reports that the National Road Maintenance Condition Survey found there had been a 'marked deterioration' in major and minor roads over the last 12 months, leaving them in their poorest state since the annual study began in 1977.
