Robin Wendt, secretary of the Association of County Councils, who has won a CBE for services to local government in the Queen's birthday honours, said:

'I am very pleased about the award and regard it as recognition of the local government organisations for whom I have worked, those I have worked with, and my family.'

Mr Wendt became secretary of the ACC in 1989. Prior to that he was chief executive of Cheshire CC for ten years, during which time he was appointed a deputy lieutenant of the county.

Previously Mr Wendt was a civil servant working mainly on social services issues.
