Rotherham MBC is not organising free guided tours of local 'grot spots', as reported with appropriate pictures in the Daily Mail.

A council spokesman claimed the newspaper was distorting the facts about an environmental awareness scheme.

He agreed the Labour-controlled authority had organised a mini-bus tour of the area but explained the aim was to educate local people about litter, graffiti and dumped car wrecks.

'People are appalled and angry at the Mail's coverage, which just happened to appear during a certain political party's conference,' said the spokesman. 'We were attempting to highlight what a minority can do to the countryside. It was a one-off.'
