Following a recent meeting in Birmingham of the leaders of the seven West

Midlands metropolitan authorities, chairman of the group Ted Richards,

leader of Solihull MBC, said:

'The leaders remain deeply concerned about the economic and social effects

surrounding the closure of MG Rover on the conurbation and neighbouring

areas, both for the immediate families involved and for the jobs in

dealerships and component supply industries.

'We are highly supportive of the on-going work undertaken by the Rover task

force. But we will also continue to press the case we made for growth in

our area, when we set down our ambitions for the future earlier this year.

We need new jobs, more investment, more research and innovation and a real

commitment from government to relocate civil service functions from London

and the south-east.'
