Rumours of a merger proposals for four councils in the North of England - Harrogate BC, Craven and Selby DCs and part of Boothferry BC - met with protest yesterday, the Yorkshire Post reports (p4).

Local Government Commission proposals for the reorganisation of North Yorkshire and Humberside are due to be announced on Monday.

Harrogate Leader Phil Willis is reported as saying such a merger would be a farce, overstretching the decision making area. Mr Willis said the authority would amount to a 'banana republic' of the North and would be guaranteed to fall apart in the future.
