Villages near York are protesting at proposals to include them in a unitary authority for the city, the Yorkshire Post reports (p8).

Reorganisation proposals for North Yorkshire say the unitary authority for York should take in surrounding parts of Ryedale, Selby, Hambleton and Harrogate district councils.

Local MP Hugh Bayley has asked environment secretary John Gummer to allow a referendum for residents to vote on whether they want to join York.
