Liverpool City Council is set to oppose government plans to allow pubs to stay open all night for the millennium celebrations because it is concerned about the extra demand on emergency services, the Daily Post reported yesterday (p8).

Officials are expected to call on the government for a scaled-down version of the plans to prevent a repeat of crowd control problems in the past.

The council is so concerned about maintaining public safety it has recommended the formation of 'flying squads' with officers from the police, fire and ambulance services.
