Chief executives of Scotland's new water authorities will earn a basic salary of £80,000 a year, The Scotsman reports (p1).

The Scottish Office has begun advertising for the heads of the three authorities which provide water and sewerage services in north, east and west Scotland - taking over from existing council-run boards in 1996.

The advertised salaries do not include additional performance related bonuses which will be subject to separate negotiations between the chief executives and the boards of each water authority.

Meanwhile, The Herald reports (p1) how the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Scottish National parties will all refuse to suggest nominees for the boards.
