The only mining museum in the north-west is facing closure because Salford MBC needs to make£13m of cuts to balance the books, reports The Guardian (p11).

The Lancashire Museum attracts 28,000 visitors a year but the council may now turn it into a staff training centre to save money.

Keith Mann, a council member, said there were other museums in Britain where people could learn about the coal industry. A decision about the museum's future will be made tomorrow.
