Sandwell MBC is targeting its school meals service for cuts to help meet a total of £8.7 million in its education budget, the Birmingham Post reports (p5).

The council is said to have turned down requests for early teacher retirements but may axe school meals staff.

And before the service is put out to tender next year the council's contract services department wants to reduce costs, the paper adds. The service costs have also been hit by the increase in Sandwell pupils receiving school meals because of the recession.
