Sandwell MBC has appointed Atkins as preferred consultant for the preparation of transport assessments and travel plans to accompany planning applications for school PFI development projects and extensions throughout the borough.

Working with the borough council, Atkins has already completed six assessments for schools projects in Sandwell, including three PFI primary school developments, a college sports facility and a classroom extension at a secondary school.

A travel plan for a special school has also been prepared, as part of the relocation to a new site. These assessments have focused on issues such as existing trip characteristics, mode split patterns and road safety.

One of the UK's leading specialist consultancies working in schools transport assessment and planning, the Atkins Travel Plan Team won the Sandwell contract in a competitive tender against two other companies. Eight Atkins' consultants based in Birmingham work on the contract, which has already generated around£40,000 in fees.

Project manager Joanna Mole says: 'This commission further extends Atkins' involvement in schools transport planning. Working in Sandwell is particularly interesting, as the borough already exhibits a high reliance on sustainable travel modes for trips to and from school, thereby providing an excellent foundation for the development of effective travel plans.'
