Scarborough BC has accused a construction firm of reneging on a pledge not to sack former council workers when it took over a maintenance contract.

Mitie has replaced the council as contractor for Yorkshire Coastal Homes (YCH), to which the council transferred its 4,500 homes in 2003.

Council chief executive Jim Dillon said Mitie had given assurances that there would be jobs for the 46 council staff concerned but two days before the date of the transfer the company raised the spectre of redundancies.

A council spokeswoman said talks were continuing and the number of redundancies was not known.

Mitie and YCH said they would, 'deliver the best possible service and in doing so safeguard the jobs of staff who have transferred to the company'.
