School arson costs millions, says report

Every year up to 1,800 primary and secondary schools suffer from a fire, research reveals.

A survey by the National Foundation for Educational Research shows 43% of schools have had a blaze in the last three years.

It also finds:

  • The measurable cost of arson attacks on schools in 2001 was£65m

  • Nearly a third of all school fires start during school time

  • About 90,000 pupils' education is affected by fire every year
