Nottinghamshire CC has announced that a new school has been found for the ten-year-old pupil whose allegedly disruptive behaviour led to a teachers' strike at Manton primary school, reports The Daily Telegraph (p6).

Meanwhile a primary school teacher who allowed a five-year-old victim to smack six bullies with a ruler faces a disciplinary hearing in front of her head and an official from Bedfordshire CC on Thursday.

Brenda Davies has written to education secretary Gillian Shephard asking for support, the Telegraph reports.

The Guardian reports (p8) that Tory backbencer James Pawsey yesterday pledged to press ahead with his amendment to restore caning to schools.

Mrs Shephard earlier confirmed that Conservative MPs would be allowed a free vote on the measure but the government would not back it.

Shadow education secretary David Blunkett attacked 'divisive' measures in the Education Bill on selection and 'on the extension of elitism'
