All 18 governors of Newbold Community School, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, have resigned rather than make budget cuts which they say would cut the teaching staff by more than a fifth, reported the Daily Telegraph (18 March, p2).

Derbyshire CC's education chairman Dave Wilcox blamed the situation on the government's refusal to fund the teachers' pay rise and said the council might consider phasing the school's budget reduction over more than one year, but warned the authority's own reserves were very low, the Daily Telegraph reported.
