The Western Mail (p3) reports that training sessions set up by Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC for school governers attracted only 186 applicants of the 1,600 total. Although almost half of them were new to membership of governing bodies (and a substantial minority were appointed by councillors), less than a quarter attended any training sessions at all. The courses were designed to help them run schools. Only two per cent of head teachers attended, while 20 per cent of parents elected to be governors took part.

Education director Kim Ryley said: 'Increasing the participation rate of governors in training events will be a key goal.'
