A secondary school run by a religious sect is likely to become the first to win government funding to enter the state system, reported the Daily Mail (October 19, p25).

John Loughborough school in Haringey, North London, run by Seventh Day Adventists, is applying to be grant maintained.

The school's application is to go to education and employment secretary Gillian Shephard for approval, but this is thought to be a formality, said the paper.
