According to an exclusive report in the Daily Mirror (p10) state schools will be £41 per pupil worse off this year after the chancellor's budget last year gave them £114m less to spend.

Kenneth Clarke's figure of a £773m increase was based on the cash limits set by the government last year. But that failed to take into account more than £600m councils took out of reserves to prop up schools.
