An independent inspectorate yesterday raised concern that schools are not covering the more demanding parts of the GCSE syllabuses, reports The Guardian (p4).

The report from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) praised rising standards in examinations but said there was weakness in important aspects of work that schools were supposed to cover.
