Almost half the nation's primary schools fail to provide children aged between eight and 11 with the minimum teaching time required by the government, reports the Daily Telegraph (p7).

The figures published by the DFE show that the worst areas are Sutton LBC, Kingston upon Thames LBC, Bedfordshire CC, whilst the best scoring areas are Hammersmith LBC, Southwark LBC, Tower Hamlets LBC and Wandsworth LBC.

However, boroughs such as Sutton and Kingston regularly feature near the top of examination league tables, whereas the inner London authorities are almost always near the bottom.
