Scotland scores highest in an eight-year study of places offering the best quality of life to their residents, according to the Independent on Sunday (Jan 12, p7).

Dumfries, Livingston, Inverness and Kendal all came out top, beating the comfortable suburban towns of the south east.

Bristol, Nottingham, Arnold and Hull held four of the five bottom positions.
