A report from the Marine Consevation Society has revealed that Scotland's beaches are improving faster than those of any other resorts in the UK.

The Herald (p3) reports that the number of beaches in Scotland failing the mandatory standard tests set by the government for pollution snd human waste contamination has fallen, down from 39 beaches to 24. There were 40 failures in England, five fewer than in previous studies.

In all, 749 beaches were monitored for bathing water quality. More than a quarter were recommended - 215 (29%) met the stringent criteria for clean bathing, 80 (11%) failed to meet the minimum standards.
