The first step towards a total of 5,100 redundancies has been made by 15 Scottish local authorities, as a result of budget crises, reports The Scotsman (p1).

The 15 authorities, which include Edinburgh and Glasgow city councils, have legally notified the DTI of the cuts, and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities has warned that a number will be compulsory.

News of the job cuts came at a COSLA meeting in Edinburgh yesterday.
