Hawick provost Tom Hogg has resigned rather than agree to women taking part in the town's Common Riding celebrations, reports The Daily Telegraph (p6).

Cllr Hogg said that he had a deep belief in the traditions and customs of Hawick and had resigned 'with heartache and pride' over the issue 'that was tearing my town apart'.
