Councillors in Scotland have a new award to formally recognise their skills, with the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities launching a qualification for members.

The Members Development Award will certificate the knowledge and skills required of elected members in Scotland. It is work-based and recognised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

COSLA vice-president Kate Maclean said the award was a first for Scotland.

She said the quality of local government depended on the quality of members.

'It is essential that councillors are equipped with all the necessary skills to carry out their jobs and maximise the provision of services to the public, particularly in a climate of tight financial resources,' she said.
