A leading SNP strategist is urging a Scottish parliament referendum on getting rid of nuclear weapons north of the border and then confronting Westminster with the results, the Scotsman reports (p6).

Although the parliament has no remit over defence, Party spokesman on constitution George Reid said it should start to demonstrate to the Scottish people the areas over which it had no power.

The statement has been attacked as a sign that the Nationalists wanted to wreck the devolved Parliament, the paper reported.

Mr Reid cited Trident nuclear weapons as the first issue but included other areas such as the macro-economic policy, broadcasting and aspects of social policy.
