The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers yesterday gave the clearest indication yet that members of the profession are prepared to stand by their demands for better pay by threatening industrial action at the start of the next school term.

Tino Ferri, the NASUWT Scottish executive member, yesterday issued a letter to his union's estimated 2,000 members asking for their support for action.

The Scotsman (p4) reports that the threat follows the breakdown of pay talks with councils, and comes ahead of a debate on the issue by the Educational Institute of Scotland, whose annual meeting takes place tomorrow.
