The registrar general's latest population estimates for Scotland and its administrative areas are released today.

These show that Scotland's population on June 30, 1996 is estimated to have been 5,128,000.

A table presenting a summary of these estimates for council and health board areas with details of the components of population change for the period mid-1995 to mid-1996 is available.

-- A booklet giving further details of the mid-1996 population estimates will be published at the end of May.
