Protesters from the village of Whitecairns are campaigning to block plans to build the first wind farm on the Scottish mainland and condemn the secrecy surrounding the development, the Scotsman reports (p4).

The campaigners crowded into a meeting of Gordon DC's planning committee yesterday to appeal to councillors to reject the plan to build a £3.5m renewable energy power station on a hillock a mile and a half from Whitecairns and opposite a local landmark called Beauty Hill. The plan would involve harnessing the electricity generated by seven giant wind turbine generators, each 61 metres high.

Jim Gifford, leader of the village deputation told the meeting that 77% of the householders were against the development and said residents were concerned about the veil of secrecy surrounding the development.

Bruce Smith, a solicitor representing the developers, Grampian Windpower, said the development was in line with the government's policy to promote renewable energy sources and there was an overwhelming presumption in its favour, the Scotsman reports.
