Around 50 contractors have set up an action group to press for the ending of the Scottish moratorium on compulsory competitive tendering for smaller council contracts, reports The Scotsman (p6).

The Forum of Private Business claims that many companies have lost up to 80% of their turnover and that thousands of jobs are at risk if the freeze on contracts less than £500,000 isn't ended soon.

Spokesman for the forum, Jim Gorie, said many contractors felt the new councils were trying to stall the reintroduction of CCT to aid their own direct labour organisations.

Unison has dismissed the establishment of the forum as a 'propaganda stunt' the paper reports.

The Scottish Office consultation period on the proposed three-stage reintroduction of CCT is due to end on Monday.
