A draft National Planning Policy Guideline (NPPG) on planning and flooding has been issued for consultation.

It is intended to clarify the present responsibilities of local authorities and others in relation to reducing the risk of flooding and to indicate the contribution to be made through the planning system.

'I am confident that these proposals provide a sensible and positive basis for progress and we look forward to considering the views of those consulted, including specialist organisations and those directly affected, before we prepare the final version,' said Scottish local government minister George Kynoch.
