The Highland economy is facing desperate long term problems, according to the bi-annual review by the Highland RC's planning department, the Scotsman reports on its front page.

An intensely pessimistic report says that while the UK as a whole begins to recover, the situation in the Highland Region continues to worsen.

Job losses and rising unemployment, much of it oil related dominate the economic picture. The report says rate of increase over the past year has been several times that for the UK as a whole and many times that for Scotland.

The report says the Highland economy is so different from that of the UK that even widespread recovery in the UK would not guarantee general recovery in the region.

The promise of increased EC funding due to the area's achievement of Objective One status had been partially offset by a lack of encouragement from the government's review of assisted areas in Britain.

This saw Badenoch and Strathspey demoted to unassisted status and the possibility of reduced regional assistance to the region.
