A call to reform Britain' s fire brigades to avoid a 'Sheehy' style shake up was heard at Fire '93, the annual conference for fire professionals yesterday, the Scotsman reports (p9).

Strathclyde's firemaster John Jameson said Scotland's brigades should be merged and halved to a total of four, while English brigades should be cut by nearly two-thirds to bring cost efficiency to the fire service.

Scottish fire brigades will not be changed as a council reform north of the Border, and Mr Jameson urged the service to be proactive rather than reactive.
