The European Commission has accused the Scottish Office of being too slow in implementing European regional development funding, and has threatened to withdraw aid if programmes are not speeded up, The Herald reports (p5).

The money involved in the latest discussions comes under the Objectives 1 and 2 covering the Highlands and Islands and the needier areas of the post-industrial central belt.

The head of the European funds division at the Scottish office, William Howat, has now written to all seven Scottish Partnerships urging them to urgently review spending projections.
