Liberal Democrat MP Charles Kennedy promised the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations this week he would raise the issue of the impact of local government reorganisation on their funding with ministers, reports The Herald (p5).

Mr Kennedy plans to raise the question at the revamped Scottish Grand Committee.

Voluntary organisations received around £90 million from local authorities, he said. But the Local Government (Scotland) Act made no provision for smoothing the transfer of these funds to the new authorities.

A gap in funding could damage or even threaten the survival of some voluntary organisations, he said.
