A monitoring report showing the outputs and costs of enterprise zones in 1995-96 is published today by the department of the environment.

The report shows that almost 60,000 square metres of new floor space was completed in the eight enterprise zones running during the monitoring period, and that 188 businesses were operating in the zones providing 9,500 jobs.

Public sector costs during 1995-96 are estimated at over £45m, with £33m being invested in land and infrastructure, and the remainder as revenue foregone from business rates and tax.

The report is the second in a series of five annual reports commissioned from consultants Roger Tym and Partners. Future reports will include full coverage of the new enterprise zone on Tyneside following the Swan Hunter shipyard closures, which is being designated in stages during 1996.

-- The report 'Enterprise Zones Monitoring 1995/96' is available priced £8.50 from Roger Tym and Partners, 9/10 Sheffield Street, London WC2A 2EY (Tel: 0171 831 2711; Fax: 0171 831 7653).
