Former Labour MP Ron Brown has been saved from bankruptcy proceedings by a benefactor who has paid off his £2,600 poll tax debts, Saturday's Scotsman reports (p3).

The money was paid to Lothian RC without Mr Brown's knowledge and covered both community charge and court costs owed by Mr Brown and his wife. Mr Brown has been a prominent campaigner against the poll tax.

Lothian was about to take bankruptcy proceedings against Mr Brown. It has already declared a number of poll tax defaulters bankrupt.
