Sedgefield BC's entire cabinet is under investigation following claims that members broke the national code of conduct when they were looking to fill the authority's most senior post.

The complaints against seven members, including the leader, have been referred to the Standards Board for England, which has launched an inquiry.

It is alleged the members 'showed favour to an officer when they were seeking a successor to the authority's chief executive', who is to stand down in the near future. No one has yet been appointed to the post.

The seven Labour councillors all deny any wrongdoing.
