Sefton MBC official have been criticised by the local government ombudsman over their handling of a racial harassment case, reports the Daily Post (Merseyside edition, p3).

A former Asian tenant complained he had suffered a campaign of verbal and physical racial abuse at a flat in the borough, but when he complained the authority failed to treat the case as racial harassment, the paper said.

Ombudsman Patricia Thomas found the authority failed to implement its own policy against racial harassment and concluded that Sefton MBC was guilty of maladministration and causing injustice.

The council has promised to tighten up its procedures.
