Sefton MBC has made a£20,000 out-of-court settlement with a family who said they were forced to flee their council homes because it became infested with cockroaches.

The Daily Post (p13) reported that the council agreed to settle after Bernadette Dolan claimed damages for distress to her and two of her four children, who she claimed had been bitten by the insects. She also claimed for the loss of all the family's furntiture.

Three days into a hearing at Liverpool county court, Mrs Dolan accepted the council's offer of£16,000 compensation for her and£2,000 for each child.

A spokesman for the council said: 'The settlement does not mean that the council accepts accepts liability. Nor does it suggest that allegations of cockroach biting were valid.'

He said the house was dusted on numerous ocassions. New tenants had moved in three years ago and there had been no complaints about cockroaches.
