£240m social care allocations revealed

  • Comment

Council allocations for the extra £240m announced by the government for social care earlier this month have been published.

The allocations, which have been made in anticipation of a rise in demand pressures over the winter months, are based on the adult social care relative needs formula and letters have been sent to councils today to inform them of the funding they will receive.

Kent CC has received the largest amount of £6.1m, while three councils – Essex and Lancashire CCs and Birmingham City Council - have received more than £5m. Just over two-thirds of the 152 council received £2m or more.

London is the biggest regional beneficiary, with a collective allocation of £37.1m, followed by the North West and the South East. Southwark LBC received the capital’s largest amount of £1.5m.

The North East received the smallest regional allocation of £13.8m.

Delays attributable to social care have reduced by 39% in England since February last year. The government has also provided £145m for hospitals to upgrade buildings, with an ambition to provide 900 extra beds this winter.

Health and social care secretary Matt Hancock said: “We will use [the £240m] to help people who don’t need to be in hospital, but do need care, to get back home, into their communities, so we can then free up those vital hospital beds, and help more people get the hospital care they need.”
