Digest: Committee calls for care solution to A&E delays

  • Comment

The government must urgently address the shortfall in social care provision to relieve pressure on hospital accident and emergency departments, according to the Commons’ health committee.

A report on A&E winter planning says patients will continue to face avoidable hospital admission and delayed discharge unless the shortfall in social care provision is addressed.

Data published in September 2016 showed that delayed discharges as a result of shortages in adult social care provision had risen by 80% in July 2016 compared to the same month in the previous year.

In what the report said was an “indictment of the existing state of adult social care”, some hospital trusts have established their own domicialiary care services but these are limited in scope due to funding pressures.
