Claims against councils for sexual abuse by teachers must be brought to court within six years, the Court of Appeal has ruled in two cases.

The court has ruled the same period should apply for assault and negligence, following cases in which people brought negligence cases against Suffolk CC and Wandsworth LBC.

Steven Ford, barrister with chambers Seven Bedford Row, said: 'Councils can breathe easier, because the appeal court has sat on attempts to get round the limitation through negligence claims.'
