Sheffield City Council's works department is facing a£10 million shortfall in its 1997-98 budget, works director John Widdowson told members last week.

The department needs income of£75m to meet its targets. Mr Widdowson said he was reasonably optimistic about winning contracts to bridge the gap.

A shortfall is normal at the start of the financial year, but uncertainty over the size of Sheffield's capital programme is having an impact this year.
