Sheffield Liberal Democrats are continuing with privatisation plans in the face of opposition, reports the Yorkshire Post (p8).

The Lib Dems, who took control of the city council in May, are pressing ahead with the privatisaion of a golf centre and a tennis centre and also plan to transfer the waste disposal service to the private sector, a move which has angered binmen.

Council leader Peter Moore said: 'People are looking for improvements in services.

'The only way that can be done in any meaningful way is to get the finances back on track and by finding alternative ways of service delivery.'

However Labour opposition leader Jan Wilson said the sports privatisation was a manifestor U-turn and the city waste disposal service was of such high quality it id not need the involvement of the private sector.

Leisure chairman Andrew Milton, who promoted the sports privatisation, has resigned, blaming pressure of work.
