The race to build a new English national sports stadium took a dramatic turn yesterday, when council-linked Sheffield City Trust unveiled a surprise plan for an 80,000-seat football and rugby venue, the Yorkshire Post reports (p1).

With less than three weeks to go before the Sports Council decides where to spend £150m of national lottery money, the city announced a scheme for a stadium on a greenfield site near the M1 at Tinsley.

Sheffield original bid to upgrade the existing Don Valley Stadium is unfancied, says the Post. It would still go ahead as art of the new plan but in a modified form.
